Characteristics of the Callers to the Motherisk Alcohol and Substance Use Helpline

The Motherisk Alcohol and Substance Use Helpline is a valuable resource in the counseling of pregnant and lactating women who use alcohol and/or street drugs. It is the only such service in Canada. The objective of this report was to describe the characteristics of callers that have called the Alcohol and Substance Use Helpline from January 1, 2004 to June 16, 2004. This analysis reveals that Motherisk counsels and refers to management a substantial group of women at high risk for adverse reproductive outcome, and hence helps in promoting maternal and child health.
