Motherisk News: Motherisk publishes book to help women with morning sickness
By Erin Collett
Dr. Gideon Koren, Director, Motherisk Program, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), and Caroline Maltepe, Co-ordinator of Motherisk Helpline, have co-authored a book, How to Survive Morning Sickness Successfully.
The book is available online at http://www.motherisk.org/women/morningSickness.jsp.
Morning sickness, also called nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, affects up to 85 per cent of pregnant women. Although its severity varies from one woman to another, morning sickness is the most common medical condition in pregnancy. However, due to fear of medications during pregnancy, many women do not get the help they need.
The book provides information on morning sickness and tips on subduing symptoms, including non-medicinal methods. It also dispels myths, such as "morning sickness is a symptom of psychological problems and can be overcome by a change in attitude."
Women who are currently pregnant or planning a pregnancy will find the book useful, and so will their partners, friends and family. Indeed, Koren hopes every woman worldwide will have free access to this resource, either through the website, the mobile app or in print.
The book is produced in partnership with Best Start, Ontario's Maternal Newborn and Early Child Development Resource Centre, which supports health promotion initiatives to enhance the health of expectant and new parents, newborns and young children.
It will be included in Best Start's online resource kit, which includes a form to order print copies for $1 each.
The Motherisk Program at SickKids is an internationally renowned counselling service, providing advice for medications in pregnancy. Koren and his team have counselled thousands of women from Canada, the United States, Australia, Israel and many other countries.
