Diagnosing myeloid leukemia in pregnancy

Question:
What is the diagnosis and treatment of acute myeloid leukemia in pregnancy?

Answer:

Acute myeloid leukemia is diagnosed in both pregnant and non-pregnant patients in a similiar way. Diagnosis includes exmination of the cells in the blood and the bone marrow and characterisation of the malignant cells (blasts) by morphology, immunophenotyping and cytogenetics.

The treatment should be tailored individually and is based on the type of leukemia, the status of pregnancy and the fetus, and the condition of the sick mother.
