Occupational exposure to chemotherapy

Question:
Do you have any references for research into the effects of occupational exposure to chemotherapy in pregnancy amongst healthcare workers? Thanks

Answer:
Studies have shown that just working with chemotherapy is probably not a problem. Urine measurements in nurses who prepare such injections do show some exposure. See Selevan et al. A study of occupational exposure to antineoplastic drugs and fetal loss in nurses. N Engl J Med 1985;313:1173-8. The recommendations are that such preparation should be performed in hoods and with masks. To our knowledge, no long term study exists on actual clinical risk.
